Paul and thread, Article...IDC predicts Intel Profusion Server sales to reach 1 billion Euros in Europe by 2003...

September 27, 1999

London, M2 PRESSWIRE : By the end of September, more than 10 server vendors will have introduced new computers based on Intel's Profusion chip set. International Data Corporation (IDC) believes that this new machine type will be extraordinarily successful, generating a billion Euros in annual revenues for vendors by 2003 in Europe.

"Having standard eight-way machines for the first time is a vitally important step forward," said Martin Hingley, senior research director at IDC. "Intel has proved its credentials in the four-way market, where the whole industry has adopted its Standard High Volume architecture. Pushing upwards to eight-way machines will test its abilities as a systems supplier and increase its reach into the heart of the server market."

IDC believes there are a number of critical issues concerning the acceptance of this product type. In particular:

The window of opportunity for Profusion will remain open until IA64 machines are capable of operating at equivalent performance rates. The delays and rumored poor performance of Merced, IA64's first chip type, may extend this time frame for Profusion.

* Over time IDC expects the ecosystem that has grown up around Intel computers to stretch upwards into this high priced area. The advantages of standard products, open supply, and competing vendors are clear in the entry server area and can be extended upwards.

* Microsoft's decision to support very limited chip types (Intel and Alpha) has limited its competitiveness against independent software vendors (ISVs) such as Oracle and Lotus. Profusion will help it to move upwards and offer more scaleable solutions than ever before.

* Bigger machines will enable these machines to address business intelligence and decision support workloads, moving beyond the collaborative and print/file areas currently addressed by more standard Intel servers.
