B: Alcatel Unveils its Complete Network Solution for the Optical Internet at
NFOEC '99; Combination of Optinex and Alcatel 2iP Provides End-to-End Service
Provider Solution

Chicago, Sep 27, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Alcatel (NYSE: ALA)
demonstrates its complete end-to-end optical Internet solution today at
NFOEC in Chicago (Booth No. 200). Combining Optinex, the Alcatel
optical networking range, and the Alcatel 2iP data edge offering,
Alcatel provides a truly end-to-end optical Internet solution which
addresses broadband access, metro and regional DWDM, SONET Ring
Management and cross-connect functionality, as well as data and
Internet services. This combination clearly illustrates Alcatel's
capability to service carriers who envision achieving a 21st century
network today.

"This comprehensive solution is a strong proof point to support our
aggressive product strategy and our recent data acquisitions," Paul
Harrison, Vice President, Optical Networks Marketing, Alcatel. "Simply
stated, Alcatel is demonstrating how we have leveraged the strengths
from the acquired data companies to provide every piece of the puzzle
for an optical Internet solution. From ADSL to the optical transport
layer, to the Internet, the solution presented at NFOEC is a true
representation of what Alcatel can deliver today."

Alcatel's Litespan New World Digital Loop Carrier (NWDLC) introduced at
Supercomm '99 will demonstrate the broadband access portion of the
network with the Alcatel 1603 SONET multiplexer handling the
multiservice delivery which feeds into the optical metro and regional
DWDM layer. Both Alcatel's 1690 Metro DWDM and 1686 Regional DWDM
products will carry IP traffic over DWDM using Xylan's OmniStack
gigabit router. The new 1631 SONET Ring Manager and the 1680 optical
gateway cross-connect provision the data traffic from the optical core
to the Data and Internet services layer. Edge data and Internet
services will be illustrated featuring the OmniSwitch and VPN Policy
Manager.

Product Details

Litespan New World Digital Loop Carrier(TM) (NWDLC) is the leading
multi-service carrier access platform delivering voice and high-speed
ATM and IP services. With the integration of Alcatel's world-leading
ADSL technology into Litespan, the system goes well beyond the
traditional Next Generation Digital Loop Carrier (NGDLC) making it the
most proven and widely deployed engine for voice and data in the local
loop. The can be configured as fiber to the node, fiber to the
building, fiber to the curb, and ultimately APON-based fiber to the
home depending on the bandwidth demands of the application.

With an embedded footprint in excess of 20 million lines in the US,
Litespan is well positioned to gracefully migrate carriers from today's
legacy to tomorrow's packet-based IP-meshed network with no stranded
investment.

DWDM products in Alcatel's simulated network include the 1686 OADM
(regional metropolitan optical add/drop multiplexer) and the 1690 OADM
(enterprise and access metropolitan optical add/drop multiplexer).
These SONET multiplexers are distinctive for meeting the critical price
point that carriers need to affordably deploy metro and regional DWDM.

Completing Alcatel's optical networking segment, the 1631 SONET Ring
Manager interfaces with the 1690 giving carriers effortless management
over an unlimited number of SONET rings. In addition, the 1680 optical
gateway cross-connect and manager (OGM/OGX) reduces network cost by
performing both transport and cross-connect like functionalities in a
single scaleable shelf. It supports a wide array of signal formats
including ATM, IP, SONET and offers new revenue generating services.

The Alcatel OmniStack, the industry's first multilayer stackable
switch, integrates layer-two and layer-three switching, using Alcatel's
advanced HRE (Hardware Routing Engine). It delivers powerful Switched
Network Services, Fast Ethernet uplinks, ATM uplinks, Gigabit Ethernet
uplinks, WAN uplinks, and layer-three switching, all at low cost. What
sets this switch apart from other small switches is Alcatel's focus on
power, flexibility, and network services.

Alcatel's OmniSwitch is an advanced, multi-layer switching platform
that supports all WAN and LAN formats, integrated IP, frame relay and
ATM switching, high-speed routing, policy-based transparent LAN
services (TLS), any-to-any switching and IP firewalls, all in an
integrated, scaleable and cost effective solution. The OmniSwitch is
distinguished by its advanced architecture and Xylan-designed switching
chips that provide a wide range of functionality at competitive prices.

Alcatel builds next generation networks, delivering integrated
end-to-end voice and data solutions to established and new carriers, as
well as enterprises and consumers worldwide. With 120,000 employees and
sales of EURO 21.3 billion ($25.0 billion), Alcatel operates in more
than 130 countries. For more information, visit Alcatel at
