MSFT is a keeper.

Unless you have a compelling reason to sell (i.e., you really need the cash) you should not. MSFT is a classic "buy and hold forever" sort of stock. Buying MSFT in 1996 is sort of like buying GE in 1896. Yes, it's a big company and dominates its market, but the future opportunities looking into the 21st century just dwarf where it is today.

Dave and Tom Gardner (aka "The Motley Fools") have a piece in the current issue of Smart Money magazine in which they speculate that MSFT could hit $1200/share by 2006. Some have ridiculed that estimate but I suspect they are a lot closer to the mark than many of their critics realize. No other company has such an enviable market position in what is undoubtedly one of the core industries of the 21st century. The evolution of the PC from hobbyist curiosity to engine of the Information Age has in reality barely begun. The next major wave in that evolution will see Windows NT roll across the corporate MIS market. That's were the profits really are, and MSFT stands to reap a bountiful harvest over the next decade.

MSFT, like all technology issues, is subject to periodic volatility. The best way to "play" this stock is simply to setup a series of regular purchases (monthly, quarterly, whenever) and ignore the short-term price swings. Check back in five years and you'll be amazed at the returns you'll have seen. Check back in ten and you'll be even happier.
