I believe that they actually have a pretty large percentage of wood in them. If during the manufacturing process they use cellulose that isn't completely dry, or if it's manufactured in such a way that the wood product in the plastic can absorb water then the expansion occurrs. On the positive side I've seen several city park benches that are built with plastic wood but didn't look for the manufacturer so perhaps the expansion was a known and fixed problem. Maybe this winter I'll take a look at them and find out if expansion is a problem.
