You know, not to be argumentative, but I've heard a similar argument with MSFT...and of course, like anyone, I sure wish I had bought either or any of several stocks that in retrospect were winners.

Unfortunately, retrospect has its limitations....and I'm sure that for any long-term investor in AOL or MSFT, there are thousands of investors that believed and held in a stock that never succeeded over the years.

It seems too simple to say that the road to success is finding the right stock and holding on....

I've always been CONVINCED that the stock I purchased had real potential....sometimes I've been right...other times, clearly in error. I've even held through reverse splits, so convinced in the long-term potential....

Of course we succeed if we happen to hold on to a winner through ups and downs.... We don't succeed if we hold on to a loser through the same ride!

Not really lecturing here...just recently "grokked" the fact that the example of MSFT(or AOL) is the exception more than the rule and the use of it as rationale for holding on, no matter what, seems less than apt.

Sorry to intrude....
