High-Speed Internet Access brought to Rhode Island Business Communities Via DSL.net
September 27, 1999 09:43

NEW HAVEN, Conn., Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- DSL.net, Inc., a leading edge provider of high-speed Internet access for America's smaller cities today announced that its business quality DSL-based service is now available to businesses in Providence and Warwick, RI.

DSL.net's new high-speed, affordable Internet service is leveling the technology playing field between small and medium-sized businesses and their larger competitors. As an Internet solutions provider and the first to offer this technology in these cities, DSL.net has introduced an "always on" solution that works with a company's existing phone lines, providing speeds as much as 40 times faster than a dial-up modem at a fraction of the cost.

"The information age and the Internet have dramatically changed the scope of business operations, making for a more competitive and faster-paced business environment," says Ray Allieri, Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing for DSL.net. "In order for small and medium-sized businesses to compete against their larger counterparts, they need affordable, unlimited, high-speed Internet access. That technological edge is now available to businesses while actually improving -- not cutting into -- their bottom line."

Digital subscriber line (DSL) technology uses a businesses current telephone lines to supply broadband service access to the Internet. Currently, DSL.net offers symmetric DSL or SDSL which provides companies with the same Internet connection speed in both directions. This provides customers with a constant connection to the Internet, which means there is immediate access to the Internet 24-hours a day, seven days a week for an unlimited number of users.

"SDSL is a high-performance Internet service that pays for itself," says Allieri. "The cost eliminates barriers for small and medium-sized businesses, plus the technology delivers significant productivity increases. Additionally, with advanced applications and services like web hosting, intranet and extranet development, and video conferencing, what was once the domain of only large companies, is now affordable and accessible to businesses in smaller cities."

DSL eliminates time employees waste waiting to get on-line with dial-up modems and/or waiting for a file to download. DSL.net estimates that it costs a company with a 56K Internet connection and total office staff spending just an hour and half per day on-line, at $15 an hour, $450 per month in time spent on-line. With a DSL 384K connection, the same amount of work can be accomplished in just 15 minutes, creating a productivity savings of $375 a month.
