HP Completes Initial Porting and Testing of HP-UX 11 On Intel's Merced Processor HP-UX is First Mission-critical Operating Environment Optimized for IA-64 PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 1999-- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced it has successfully completed the initial porting and testing of the HP-UX(1) 11 operating environment on Intel's Merced processor. HP reached this milestone during the company's designated testing session at Intel's lab in Dupont, Wash.
HP-UX 11, which was released in 1997, is shipping today on HP's PA-RISC-based V-Class, N-Class and L-Class Enterprise Servers.
``We have achieved a key milestone in the development of HP-UX 11 optimized for Intel's Merced processor,' said Jim Davis, general manager for HP's IA-64 program. ``With the help of our partners NEC and Hitachi, we have proven that our current version of HP-UX is IA-64-ready, and we expect it to be the premier mission-critical operating environment to address the needs of the IA-64 marketplace.'
``We are pleased with the progress that HP has made in the development of HP-UX 11 for Intel's Merced processor,' said Stephen L. Smith, vice president and general manager, Intel IA-64 Processor Division. ``The combination of the HP-UX operating environment, optimized for IA-64, with the computing power of the Merced processor will provide a robust solution that addresses the needs of the Internet and emerging e-business market segments.'
HP's Advantage: Optimized Performance and Ease of Implementation
Due to its collaboration with Intel on the 64-bit instruction set architecture, HP understands how to best optimize software and system architectures to take full advantage of the scalability, availability and computing power that IA-64 offers. HP's customers will enjoy enhanced performance on IA-64-based systems, beginning with Merced, due to this system-level optimization. |
