Richard,

I agree with you that most projects in biotechs have rational scientific foundation. Whether these projects have financial foundations or not is a totally different matter. Sure there are many signal transduction proteins that are invovled in various diseases. But you simply can not develop a drug just based on that information. It takes ages to find a protein that is involved in a specific step in signal transduction. It takes even longer to find a small non-toxic molecule to inhibit the protein. The inhibitors that can both penetrate the cell membrane and inhibit kinases and phosphatases have been developed long time ago for chemical warfare and pesticides. Unless someone wants to commit genocide, there is no point to even try to find the small molecule specific for the MAP kinase.

Again, thanks for bringing up the issue of rational foundation. It appears that a lot of the projects in most of the biotech firms are either financial scams to soothe the investors or even worse, scientific none sense. You just have to read through the research literature carefully and then ask: if this makes sense scientifically, how it can be made into a product and generate revenue. It is a rare instance when you can actually convince yourself that the company can make money based on the result of some projects.

Good Luck making money.
