I'm not sure what you mean by "VRSN encryption." Can you be more specific what product you're talking about?

Until IBM issues a PR and provides more details on just what software they will be providing with the chip, it's hard to tell exactly what they're doing.

Yes, all security vendors should be concerned to some extent with security elements becoming embedded in such things as operating systems, PCs and data comm equipment. It seems to me though, that because companies like Verisign and Entrust are in the business of providing the Certificate Management capabilities of the PKI, they are the least threatened of the bunch, and actually stand to gain. Managing a Certificate Authority is no fun and can be very costly. That's one reason why organizations are willing to pay such outrageous sums of money for certs from VRSN and ENTU.

By the way, there are several companies that offer Certificate Authorities or Certificate services. Competition isn't new to Verisign in that arena. Microsoft will even include a Certificate Server in Windows 2000 Server along with other components for PKI support. microsoft.com
