Thank you for that response. It sounds very plausible - I am not into the guts of chips, just using them. I work mostly with fpgas, plds, dsps and the software that runs on them. I also teach "how computers work" to medical informatics students at masters level.

It is certainly the case that the input characteristics of latches which interface to the outside world are much less well specified than those that are totally internal. This is clear from, for example Xilinx data sheets.

Possibly the chip-scale packaging used by Rambus helps in keeping setup and hold time tolerances tight. Maybe also extra care is used in the input circuit layout on the chip and in maintaining good quality ground and power in these regions to avoid phase modulation of the clock by noise causing degradation of these parameters. I am still curious to know whether Rambus have designed their own data latches for higher performance, or whether it is just a matter of more care being needed in layout and tighter testing tolerances.
