very good point about education...

I think many are doing just that -- sending
their kids to private school...

Actually, I think the Republicans should push
a "Student's Bill of Rights" modeled closely
after the Democrats' so-called "Patient's Bill
of Rights". Just substitute "public school
system" for "HMO", "teacher" for "doctor", and
"student" for "patient". So, if a patient should be able
to sue an HMO for receiving inadequate care, why can't a
student sue the public school system for receiving
an inadequate education? If a patient should be able
to choose his own doctor, why can't a student choose
his own teacher (i.e. private school)?

Actually, where I live in Austin, TX, the public
school system was recently found to be falsifying
the scores of state-mandated student tests to
make their overall district results look better
than they actually were. How is this any different
than the tobacco companies covering up the health
effects of tobacco?

One last point about private schools...
Over the past few months, since the shootings in
Colorado in April, there has been all this commentary
about what in society has caused this. I've yet to
hear anyone point out that not a single shooting
incident (out of many that have happened over the
past few years) took place in a private school.
Not one! This is statistically very significant!
