Weyrich is a smart guy, and a person of substance, so I do not mean to be cavalier, but he is, I think, one of those who imagines that he is backed by the Silent Majority down the line, and will not take seriously that only about a third of the electorate are conservative, about another 20 or 25 percent libertarian, and the biggest section self- identified moderates (fewer people identify themselves as liberal or leftist than moderates!) In other word, even on common economic issues, we have only a bare majority, and must pull some moderates. On social issues, especially for the full agenda,we have much less support, which is why issues like PBAs, which command widespread revulsion, are important to focus on. In fact, there is probably an electoral majority against abortion after the first trimester, but not against it from conception. Therefore, we must do what we can within circumscribed limits...Now, a reasonable argument can be made that there is an educational value in a third party, but I do not see why that function is not just as well fulfilled as a faction within the Republican Party, while supporting efforts to put more conservatives into office through the primaries..... |
