I have been using the Web for awhile for research, but at the library, since I had an old computer that was not very good for surfing at home. Last January, I finally got a high- powered machine. I found the SI coffee shop threads through Go2Net, as news discussion threads. My wife wanted me to be anonymous, just in case, and so I chose the term "neoconservative", or Neocon for short. I started out discussing politics, and it came the closest to representing the group I identified with, anti- communist ex- leftists and liberals who supported Reagan on defense grounds. Most of them ended up becoming Republican and conservative, as I did, but they had a "background" in common, and particular frames of reference. Of course, I ended up on SI directly, and talk of many things besides politics, but I think it has a "ring".... |
