Leading DSL Vendors Endorse Nortel Networks' Secure DSL Solution To Accelerate Mass Market DSL Adoption
Will Work Together to Educate Market About Secure DSL Solutions
RESTON, Va., Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Nortel Networks* (NYSE: NT; Toronto) today announced at DSLcon that ten prominent DSL vendors have joined with Nortel Networks to promote 'Secure DSL' as a proactive solution for alleviating the increasing concerns in the mass market about the security risks of DSL lines. These companies include Cayman Systems Inc., CopperCom, Efficient Networks Inc., FlowPoint, Jetstream Communications Inc., Netopia, Inc., Network TeleSystems, Inc., Promatory Communications, Inc., TollBridge Technologies and Wind River Systems, Inc.
'Secure DSL' is Nortel Networks' solution for protecting subscribers using 'always-on' DSL lines from network attack and hackers. Nortel Networks' Secure DSL solution offers complete security for DSL subscribers by securing each DSL line with network-based, stateful packet firewalls, precluding outside attacks. Secure DSL is one element of a suite of new capabilities announced today by Nortel Networks to enable mass market DSL and is offered as a new feature on the company's Subscriber Services System consisting of the Shasta 5000 Broadband Service Node (BSN) with the IP Service Operating System (iSOS) and the Service Creation System (SCS).
Security concerns, arising from early DSL market trials, could hinder the rapid adoption of DSL. The ten companies endorsing Nortel Networks' Secure DSL solution have announced their intent to interoperate with the Shasta 5000, and to team up to educate the market about the availability of Secure DSL services through a comprehensive marketing program, hence pre-empting any market concerns and accelerating market adoption of DSL Services.
''It is vital for the success of DSL that all DSL vendors work together to educate the market that DSL can indeed be a secure means of accessing the Internet,'' said Anthony Alles, president and general manager of Nortel Networks' Shasta IP Services business unit. ''The companies we are working with include the leading client software, DSL CPE, DSLAM and voice over DSL companies in the industry.''
Client Software Vendors
Network Telesystems/NTS
''NTS shares Nortel's vision that security is a core requirement of broadband access. Firewall protection from the Shasta 5000 Broadband Service Node nicely complements the encryption security capabilities in our EnterNet subscriber client software,'' said John Davidson, president of Network TeleSystems (NTS) which develops IP infrastructure products for enterprise and broadband networks.
Wind River Systems
''As a client software vendor, Wind River Systems realizes that while security features such as IPSec ensure data integrity, there are no universally available solutions for protecting the customers PC when using always-on technologies such as DSL,'' said Dave Fraser, vice president and general manager of Wind River Networks business unit which provides Windows-based Internet access solutions including WinPoET, a cost-effective solution for managing end-user access to broadband networks. ''The security issue cannot be solved with simple encryption. Security features like residential firewall or IP-VPN for small businesses are needed. Broadband deployment will explode when network-based firewall features become common at the subscriber edge of Service Provider networks. Nortel Networks with the Shasta 5000 Broadband Service Node and its ability to support network-based firewalls solves this issue.''
CPE Vendors
Cayman Systems Inc.
''CPE vendors such as Cayman are supportive of solutions that accelerate mass market acceptance of DSL,'' said Ms. Heidi Clark, president and CEO, Cayman Systems Inc., a CPE provider for broadband service providers that sell to the home and small office markets. ''As an increasing number of businesses and consumers begin to leverage the economic and performance benefits of broadband access, the requirement for 'secure' connections will grow exponentially. CPE solutions available today are targeted at large enterprises. Nortel Networks with the Shasta 5000 Broadband Service Node and its ability to support network-based firewalls makes this functionality available to small businesses and consumers for the first time.''
Efficient Networks Inc.
''CPE vendors such as Efficient are supportive of solutions which remove the barriers to mass market acceptance of DSL,'' said Peter Bourne, director of product marketing for Efficient Networks, Inc., a leading, independent supplier of DSL voice and data access products to the worldwide data and telecommunications markets. ''With the explosion of broadband access to residential customers and small business, networking vendors need to address security as it relates to 'always-on' technologies like DSL.''
FlowPoint
''CPE vendors such as FlowPoint are supportive of solutions which remove the barriers to mass market acceptance of DSL. Security of always-on technologies like DSL is one of those barriers,'' said Chuck Waggoner, president of FlowPoint, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cabletron Systems that designs, manufactures, and markets DSL network access products.
Netopia, Inc.
''Netopia has long recognized the importance of security with an always-on DSL connection,'' said Chris Willrich, director of business development for Netopia, which develops, markets and supports Internet and electronic commerce infrastructure for small and medium size businesses. ''Having two lines of defense, one customer premise equipment-based and the second network-based, will benefit end customers and service providers alike. We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with Nortel, under its Secure DSL program, toward ensuring the interoperability of our DSL solutions.''
Broadband Access Companies
CopperCom
''To ensure market acceptance of new services such as voice over DSL, potential customers need to know that these services are scalable and that cost-effective security solutions are available,'' said Cynthia Ringo, president and CEO of CopperCom, a market leader in delivering carrier-class voice over DSL equipment. ''Nortel Networks with the Shasta 5000 Broadband Service Node and its ability to support network-based firewalls solves this issue, enabling small businesses and residential customers to reap the many benefits of voice over DSL.
Jetstream Communications
''Jetstream is supportive of solutions which remove the barriers to mass market acceptance of DSL,'' said S. Sundi Sundaresh, president and CEO of Jetstream Communications, a leading provider of voice over DSL solutions. ''As an increasing number of businesses and consumers begin to leverage the economic and performance benefits of broadband access, the requirement for 'secure' connections will grow exponentially. Nortel Networks with the Shasta 5000 Broadband Service Node and its ability to support network-based firewalls solves this issue.''
Promatory Communications Inc.
''Next generation broadband access system providers such as Promatory are supportive of solutions which remove the barriers to mass market acceptance of DSL,'' said Timothy Waters, vice president marketing, Promatory Communications, Inc., a leading provider of the next-generation broadband access switching platforms. ''Scalability of access is required plus scalability of security solutions. Promatory understands those issues and has worked to address scalability of access with its next generation IMAS platform. Nortel Networks with the Shasta 5000 Broadband Service Node and its ability to support network based firewalls removes the barrier of scalability of security solutions.''
TollBridge Technologies, Inc.
''TollBridge believes that the addition of full-featured local loop voice support is the killer application for DSL and other broadband,'' said Jim Grady, vice president of marketing for TollBridge Technologies, a leading developer of IP-based multiline voice solutions targeted at CLECs. ''The cost-effective network based-security offered by the Shasta 5000 Broadband Service Node will accelerate its wide acceptance. TollBridge's IP based voice and the Shasta 5000 are natural in making convergence real.''
