---Lucent to build Brazilian quick wireless network
SAO PAULO, Brazil, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Telecommunication's products giant Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - news) on Monday said it has agreed to supply Vesper, a new Brazilian local telephone provider, with a wireless voice and data network.
The project, which could be worth $470 over five years and service could begin as early as December, Lucent said.
The deal with Vesper -- trade name for Megatel do Brasil S.A, a consortium of Bell Canada International Inc. (Toronto:BI.TO - news), , Qualcomm Inc. (NasdaqNM:QCOM - news) and VeloCom Inc., and SLI Inc. (NYSE:SLI - news) of Argentina -- is subject to negotiation of final terms and conditions and would include financing.
Under the proposed agreement, Murray Hill, N.J.-based Lucent will supply a ''wireless local loop'' that uses base stations to relay radio signals that deliver communications services to receivers installed at the home or business. The system can be operational faster than other communication networks because it doesn't require installers to dig trenches and install cable or telephone poles.
To users, the phones operate just like any ordinary phone, connected through the in-house wiring system.
''The rapid deployment of WLL will allow us to meet all our commitments and deadlines, and to begin offering high-quality services at a competitive price,'' Virgilio Freire, president of Vesper, the trade name for Megatel do Brasil S.A., said in a statement.
The Megatel consortium won the second carrier license to provide competitive local and long distance services in the state of Sao Paulo.
Lucent also will supply other products and services for network management and other telecommunication services. In future years, the contract also calls for the installation of optical fiber and copper networks, as new systems to allow for higher-speed data transmissions.
