This just in:
Galloway's offers have been removed. The Seahawks front office says he can come in under his current contract, and wishes him the best of luck, and says it's the last public statement on the matter.
The way Pritchard, Dawkins and crew are playing maybe it will work out. I don't think Galloway liked Holmgren's work ethic.
I hope he does well on some other team, and maybe someday he will match up against Springs.
When the first news flash came in, "BIG GALLOWAY NEWS STRAIGHT AHEAD..." I thought of a conversation I'd had yesterday with another fan where we'd speculated that the Galloway deal would get done this week, after the big win in Pittsburgh, and he'd be on the field the following week - after the Raiders game. So as the radio goes away for a commercial, I'm thinking, "wait a minute... do we want this guy back right now? what will it do to the team chemistry? They're spreading the ball around great right now... will Galloway be disruptive and always whining about getting the ball? In this system he might only get 5 catches a game.
Well they (radio show) came back and the news was that Galloway is gone.
I don't really know what happened to get to this point, but my speculation remains that Galloway isn't a multi-dimensional receiver, but more of a speed threat. When he realized Holmgren was serious about making him into an all-around receiver - playing every down and running more slants and crossing routes - maybe he didn't want that kind of work load.
I'm sure we'll know more about him as a player when he gets to another team (in 1 or 2 years?) and resumes his career.
It sure seems to me like an awfully strange time to start whining about money... moments before your team's winning percentage has a shot at a big upturn...
I like the players who want the ring... that's why I had no problem with the guys who went to SF and won that one year at reduced wages... that "ploy" really upset one of my fan buddies at the time .
At Seattle in the past couple of years we've seen guys take pay cuts to open up room under the cap. LB Darren Smith did this, and so did S Daryl Williams. This is a team sport. Does Galloway contribute more than Williams or Smith? DE Sinclair was set to make just over a mil in the last year of his contract, but he went to camp without complaint. He was rewarded with a great contract.
More than ever I'm convinced that platooning on defense and spreading the ball on offense is preferable to depending upon a couple of stars. Perhaps as well the offense begins and ends at QB and Holmgren's genius is at its best there. We've got Kitna, and Foley, and Huard at 6'4" and over 230 pounds makes for a prototype quick release, strong-armed QB of the future. In the preseason he showed he could run. With 238 pounds that gives him good size against DBs in the open field, and puts him on an even par with many LBs.
Anyway... getting back off tangent... Galloway is gone.
