NAMPA, Idaho--Micron Electronics, the No. 3 direct seller of personal computers, said fiscal fourth-quarter sales soared on growth in chip sales and wider margins on personal computers.
Net income in the quarter ended September 2 rose to $13.7 million, or 14 cents a share, from $7.2 million, or 8 cents, a year earlier. The company was expected to earn 7 cents, the average estimate of analysts surveyed by First Call.
Revenue fell 1.7 percent to $333.1 million from $339 million for Micron Electronics, which is majority-owned by Micron Technology, a maker of memory chips used in personal computers and other electronics.
Computer makers such as Micron, Dell Computer, the biggest direct seller of PCs, and Gateway face mounting competition from companies such as Free-PC, which is giving away machines to customers who agree to have advertisements on their screens or to sign up for long-term Internet service.
Nampa, Idaho-based Micron, like larger rival Dell, sells PCs to customers over the phone and by the Internet. |
