Actually, pre-war right is a misnomer. Pre-1952 is more accurate. Bob Taft had the popular support of the Republican Party in 52, but Ike was Wall Street's candidate. There are still those who say the nomination was stolen from Taft. The real dagger in the heart, though, was the defeat of the Bricker Amendment in 1951. The amendment was a last desperate effort to preserve American independence against the encroachment of international agencies. The amendment started out with 56 co-sponsors, but went down to defeat 46-50, with 4 not voting. We did not walk very willingly into this world of supra-national agencies. We were pretty much dragged kicking and screaming. The defeat of the amendment, combined with the death of Taft in 1953 and Colonel McCormick (owner of the Chicago Tribune) in 1955 marked the death of the old right. That is, until Paddy boy got this wacky idea...
