The first snowfall- and we are still in shorts and swimming! It sounds incredible. I'll have to buy a coat and gloves to come see you. There is so much childhood magic wrapped up in snowfall...sledding and ice skating, hot chocolate and thawing by a fire, making angels in the snow and snow ice cream, burning cheeks and frozen toes. Do you remember standing under the first flakes and sticking your tongue out to catch them? And learning that no two flakes were alike, but unable to hold onto any long enough to really see? I had red boots. Shiny ones. And mittens on a string. And a onepiece blue snowsuit- remember those? Once when the boys were very little, it snowed (well, icystuff-as close as we get here) and having no boots for them, I wrapped baggies around their sneakers. Ammo must have been about 13 months. It was like a cruelty joke. THe poor baby had only been walking a few months and his sadistic mother puts plastic on his feet and says, now walk. He slid and fell, slid and fell. Cried and cried. WHen we finally came in, I discovered that somehow when he fell, he had gotten his diaper full of icy snow, like a frozen doughnut around his waist. He says he remembers this. He says he remembers a lot of things- usually unpleasant and always my fault. I just wanted them to have a happy childhood winter memory. |
