I concur with your ideas here. The marginally profitable division
may be worth keeping, as there are profits other than merely shown ion the bottom line. In fact, it appears that computer companies( other than Dell) have something in common with fishermen and farmers.
That is, bring back the old days, the trollers have ruined the
fishing industry, the crop prices are too low to make a living
any more.etc. Gripe, gripe, gripe.
Even a break-even division is paying the overhead, paying
into the retirement benefits, paying stock options, paying for administration and paying down the cost of facilities etc.
And the company does not have to get a reputation for laying people off.
Summary:
IMO the ideas being spread around about a lack of profits
in the computer industry are exaggerated, but the really inefficient
companies will have to change or fade away like old soldiers.
