I think that the answer to your question is yes. In this week's Barrons, there is an article on page MW15 talking about HOLDRs. I quote: "Option players can buy HOLDRs and then layer hedging or directional strategies on top of them. And because a HOLDRs owner is officially a beneficial owner of the component stocks, he or she is conveniently considered long the stock for option margin purposes, for such things as covered call writing."
