Rich,

Thanks for posting that WSJ link. I find it extremely interesting to hear mp3 and dog tag used in the same breath. It speaks to the universality of flash memory. As Geoffrey Moore states in his book on Gorilla investing, the potential for a discontinuous innovation grows because previously undiscovered applications for the technology seem to pop up overnight...

The so-called personal information carriers are similar to the tiny memory-chip cards that store images in a digital camera or sound in an MP3 player. They will be worn around the neck along with traditional dog tags and are intended to make it easier to treat soldiers in combat, and to track treatments and exposures to wartime chemicals.

Being in a medical field I can tell you that the current medical records system is entirely inadequate. High capacity, portable memory has great potential of replacing the cumbersome medical records now in use. These currently resemble the NYC Yellow Pages after being left out in the rain and being put in your clothes dryer for a few cycles.

I can foresee a patient walking into a clinic with a personalized CF card and placing it into a physician's desktop PC or handheld (Cassiopeia or color Palm Pilot) where all prior clinic notes, labs, x-rays,... are accessible with a few mouse clicks.

Imagine the time savings. Imagine the number of trees that would be spared. Imagine patients actually getting face-to-face time with their physicians.

The potential is immense, IMHO.
