Looks like it's still a ways off. They plan to start the service in 2001 and they'll probably put 50 gig hard drives on these new Play Stations. So, at current rates, what will a 50 gig hard drive cost in 2001? Maybe $50.

But why a 50 gig hard drive? Because these things will be your PC/server/entertainment console. Certainly, they won't need 50 gig to play a game, will they? It'll be a pretty amazing game if they do.

Anyway, it supports your model of very large off site storage. Clearly, they see CD and DVD as a temporary solution to providing entertainment and will instead opt for network based storage. Always have the freshest games and play with people you never met.

Eventually, they'll have these things controling real airplanes and tanks and then we'll have to rethink everything.

Regards,

Mark
