Wind River Systems, Intel Corporation Advance State-Of-The-Art Embedded Application Development
Business Wire - September 28, 1999 08:19
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 28, 1999--

Embedded Systems Conference 99

New Relationship Produces First Product for Competitive Internet-Driven Applied Computing Market Segment

Wind River Systems, Inc., and Intel Corporation today announced at the Embedded Systems Conference a formal Wind River/Intel Corporation collaboration through the Wind River Center of Excellence. Through combined engineering and marketing resources, the two companies will facilitate porting, optimization and distribution of Wind River's Tornado(TM) development platform and industry-leading VxWorks(R) real time operating system across the Intel(R) Celeron(TM), Pentium(R) II and Pentium processor families. The first product of the relationship--new drivers supporting Intel Ethernet silicon--are available immediately. (See separate Wind River press release today on the Wind River Center of Excellence at www.windriver.com.)

These first joint solutions, used in communications applications such as transaction terminals and industrial PCs, can be obtained now on both the Wind River (www.windriver.com) and Intel (www.intel.com) websites. Future Wind River products include the V-Tune(TM) Performance Analyzer for use in embedded environments. The collaboration will result in board support packages (BSPs) for new Intel evaluation boards and a version of the Tornado development platform that includes a highly optimized compiler for the embedded Intel architecture. These products will begin shipping early next year.

Tom Franz, vice president and general manager, Intel's Applied Computing Products Division, said, "Intel has a long and successful history of providing high-performance microprocessors for applied computing applications and remains committed to providing leading-edge solutions to the embedded market segment. Wind River developers using Intel Architecture and Wind River Systems real-time operating systems and development tools can now more fully utilize the features inherent in Intel microprocessors."

Collaboration Helps Customers

Developers will additionally benefit from integrated Wind River and Intel product offerings in the following ways:

- Software optimized for embedded Intel Architecture simplifies the development process and reduces development costs, resulting in cutting-edge applications

- Software available close to the time processors are announced for the embedded market segment allows early prototyping and application development

- Software that takes advantage of new architecture features for the embedded environment allows developers to focus on their own core competencies

- Wind River and Intel product road maps provide a long-term growth path and preserve current and future technology investments

"As the Internet has accelerated product cycles and embedded technology becomes more pervasive, our customers are demanding increasingly complex technology," said Jerry Fiddler, co-founder and chairman of Wind River Systems. "Operating systems today are expected to contain far more technology than they did ten years ago, including memory management and multiprocessing. Going forward, we see this trend growing to include graphical user interfaces (GUIs), fault tolerance, distributed objects and Java. By working with Intel on the Center of Excellence, we can provide developers best-of-class solutions that help developers gain the advantages of working with standardized technology and Intel Architecture."

"The Intel Pentium processor architecture and Wind River's embedded software are each important to embedded computing customers, so this collaboration is a welcome step," said Bob Lyon, director and vice president of the Cross-Industry Business Unit at Motorola Computer Group. "By working together on this Center of Excellence with engineering and marketing resources, Wind River and Intel demonstrate their commitment to increase developer productivity and product performance. Our customers will have even greater access to well-designed, robust and optimized tools for embedded computing."
