Jon, you have been getting some excellent advice on this thread as to how to discover happiness. I say discover because it is there; you already have so many of the ingredients. It is, as Neocon and so many others are suggesting, found when one reaches outside one's self, becomes as unselfconscious as possible--whether through religion or philosophy or social works or some combination. Small gestures that we don't even think about--holding a door for someone, showing consideration for others, trying to offer help to someone in need--can make the difference in other people's day and elicit good in return. One small example that you can go and see for yourself: Last week I had a birthday. It was a dreary day in terms of weather and I had reasons to feel a bit blue. len grasso started a thread to wish me a happy birthday and I was stunned by the responses; I'd had no idea that I had touched so many people on SI alone who would take a moment to stop by and send me their good wishes. It was a day of great happiness for me both on SI and in the 3D world.
