Tundra Announces PCI-X Licensing Agreement with Compaq
KANATA, ONTARIO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 28, 1999--Anticipating the needs of the embedded systems market, Tundra Semiconductor Corporation (TSE: TUN) announced it has licensed Compaq Computer Corporation's (NYSE: CPQ) PCI-X development technology.
Tundra will use this PCI-X development technology to further enhance its established leadership position in the embedded market. Tundra believes PCI-X is a natural progression from the PCI-based products they currently develop. PCI-X is an innovative and evolutionary I/O technology, which increases system effectiveness through greater I/O throughput and efficiency.

PCI-X provides up to eight times the speed of current PCI bus technology, offering customers the high performance that is needed for demanding applications such as telecommunication and datacommunication systems. A compatible extension of the existing PCI-Bus, the 64-bit PCI-X architecture runs at speeds up to 133 MHz, providing transfer rates above 1 gigabyte per second. This critical I/O bandwidth is needed for systems running enterprise applications such as Gigabit Ethernet, Fiber Channel, and Cluster Interconnects. Through this agreement with Compaq, Tundra will develop a new breed of system interconnect products for the telecommunications and datacommunications industry.

"The evolutionary upgrade built into PCI-X will allow our customers to protect their investment in existing PCI-based platforms, while enjoying the performance boost offered by the new PCI-X technology," said Richard O'Connor, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Tundra. "By partnering with Compaq, Tundra is ideally positioned to lead the embedded market with future PCI-X based products."

Recognizing Tundra as the leader in standard bus interconnect solutions, Compaq selected Tundra as the first participant to join Compaq's exclusive Golden Master Program (for more information about the Compaq Golden Master Program, please see compaq.com for their September 28, 1999 media release).

"Given its prominence in the embedded systems marketplace, we are pleased that Tundra has become the first company to join Compaq's new PCI-X Golden Master Program and we look forward to working closely with them in the development of PCI-X-based solutions," said Ken Jansen, Director of Advanced Server Architecture and Design, Industry-Standard Server Division, Compaq Computer Corporation.

Membership in Compaq's Golden Master Program guarantees participants early access to the benefits of Compaq's PCI-X development technology, enabling them to provided more competitive solutions to the embedded systems marketplace. Compaq is providing Golden Master Program participants with valuable tools and information that simplify and accelerate design cycles as well as industry adoption of PCI-X technology. As a leader in the development of PCI-X technology, Compaq is committed to helping Golden Master Program participants provide best-in-class solutions for their customers. About Tundra
