Jim K., There is plenty of software that runs on IBM's 4xx PowerPC chips. Among embedded operating systems there's IBM's own OS Open, WindRiver's VxWorks, Integrated Systems' pSOS, QNX's Neutrino, as well as many others. I believe all of these will support the 405GP which was announced earlier this year as well as the newly announced 440 processor core. WindowsCE has support for the 403GC and 403GCX. Linux is also running on 4xx parts.

I think it's important to note that the 440 is a 32-bit processor which connects to the 128-bit CoreConnect bus internally on an ASIC (Applic. Specific Integrated Circuit/Chip). IBM offers a no cost on-chip bus architecture with the hopes that it will become an industry standard. Check out the IBM Microelectronics site for more info on the CoreConnect bus and their products.
