And BTW, I also think we owe Gorbachev A LOT. No democratically elected President could possibly have made the kind of concessions to the "other side" that he made; outraged voters would have thrown him out the very next day ("What are you, some kind of commie??" Or, "What are you, some kind of capitalist??") And why does Gorbachev still get mobbed by admirers when he comes over here? Because HE is the man many Americans think deserves primary credit for ending the Cold War.

And I don't think Yeltsin personally brought anything "crashing down."
But that's another -- and even longer -- story.


Joan, can you recommend a good book on recent political turmoil in Russia? I have read quite a lot on the history of the region but nothing on recent events which are equally noteworthy as anything in the first half of the century... in fact maybe you have written a book??

A spy novel that I haven't read yet - written by a US intelligence and espionage expert, himself a former spy - claims that some in the KGB still thing Gorbechev was a double agent for the US, that the fall of communism was an effective American plot....
