Alcatel Buys Genesys Laboratories

AP Online, Tuesday, September 28, 1999 at 09:32

PARIS (AP) - Alcatel of France is buying Genesys
Telecommunications Laboratories, a San Francisco-based provider of
computer telephone technology, for $1.5 billion in stock.
Alcatel said Tuesday the acquisition complements its five U.S.
purchases during the past year, leaving the company
''well-positioned to benefit from the exploding demand for
voice-data integration in the United States.'' Recent U.S.
purchases by the maker of communications equipment have included
DSC and Xylan.
Under the latest deal, Alcatel will swap 1.667 of its U.S.
shares for each share of Genesys. The deal is expected to be
completed in January 2000.
Genesys specializes in computer telephone integration equipment
and telecom management.
Alcatel Chairman Serge Tchuruk said the acquisition of Genesys
should boost the French company's position in the high-growth call
center market.
''This is another major step for Alcatel, which continues to
move quickly towards high-growth markets fueled by the Internet and
now, e-commerce,'' Tchuruk said.
