Tiny Town Finally Gets Phones KENNEDY MEADOWS, Calif. (AP) -- More than 123 years after the telephone was invented, this tiny village high in the eastern Sierra Nevada finally has phone service. Residents gathered around as the first official call was made at 4 p.m. Saturday. Jan Gant, co-owner of Grumpy Bear's Tavern, picked up the receiver of an antique-style wall phone and began to dial as country music played in the bar. But all Gant got was an answering machine. She left a message at the Texas home of a former Kennedy Meadows resident, who later called back surprised. The calls were a long time coming. It has been more than four years since the California Public Utilities Commission OK'd phone service for the Tulare County community of about 70 people 6,000 feet up in the mountains. Five residents are now hooked up to the phone system. With so few customers in Kennedy Meadows' 850 prefix, Ducor Telephone Co. has allowed residents to pick their last four digits.
