V3 Semiconductor Announces High Performance 64-bit, 66MHz PCI-to-PCI Bridge
SANTA CLARA, Calif. & TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 1999--At the Embedded Systems Conference in San Jose, California, V3 Semiconductor (NASDAQ:VVVI - news) announced today the V390PPB - A High Performance, 64-bit, 66MHz PCI-to-PCI bridge device.

The V390PPB is a highly integrated, high performance peripheral device that performs PCI-to-PCI bridging functions. This Hot Swap Ready device expands the capability of the host PCI bridge by providing an extension to support additional PCI devices or slots on a system board. It simplifies the design by providing a single chip with all the necessary logic to implement a complex PCI bus-based system. This single chip solution provides all the necessary features for the growing need for high-speed data transfers in the exploding digital communications market. Furthermore, 64-bit primary and secondary PCI buses operating at 66MHz asynchronously provide high performance bridging functions for advanced networking and telecommunications products, mass storage controllers (SCSI, RAID), and office automation applications. The V390PPB provides OEM's with the technology they need to successfully compete in the fast-emerging information appliance convergence.

High Performance PCI-to-PCI Bridge

This new device family is an addition to the line of leading-edge PCI and Memory controllers for embedded applications from V3 Semiconductor. It features a fully compliant PCI-to-PCI Bridge Architecture Specification, Revision 1.1, as well as PCI Local Bus Specification, Revision 2.2. The Hot Swap Ready V390PPB provides a simple, flexible bridging solution without compromising performance. This is achieved by supporting 64-bit, 66MHz operation on both the primary and the secondary PCI buses by supporting concurrent primary and secondary operations and by allowing asynchronous clocks on primary and secondary PCI bus interface. The V390PPB also features support for both 5V and 3.3V signaling environments, programmable secondary PCI bus interface arbiter, and general purpose programmable I/O interface signals further ensure flexibility. Support for queuing of multiple transactions in either direction, 1 Kbyte of buffering in either direction for both the memory writes and memory reads further enhance performance in data transfers through the bridge.

Better Performance/Cost Alternative to Intel 21154 Bridge

The V390PPB is a pin-to-pin compatible device for Intel 21154 PCI-to-PCI bridge. However, there are advancements, performance enhancements, and feature additions that systems engineers will use to differentiate their products from the products based on 21154. The V390PPB enhancements include FIFOs that are four times larger than in the 21154, support for 66 MHz clock on both primary and secondary bus, asynchronous clock, I2O message unit, more general purpose programmable I/O's, industrial temperature operation, and the CompactPCI Hot Swap Ready feature.

Development Tools and Support

A flexible evaluation platform (Typhoon) will be available for customers to assess technology and the features of V390PPB, to validate compatibility to Intel 21154, and to accelerate software and hardware development effort in using V390PPB. In addition, a team of dedicated and competent engineers is available through the V3HELP channel for technical consultations on all V3 products.

Availability and Pricing

Samples of the V390PPB, evaluation board, and SDK will be available in February 2000 with production release scheduled for late April 2000. The V390PPB, packaged in a 304-pin Plastic Ball Grid Array (PBGA), is priced at $30.00 for 10,000 pieces. It also supports industrial temperature (-40 degrees C to +85 degrees C) operations.
