Intel to Build Online Services Site In Virginia to House 8,000 Servers
Associated Press
FAIRFAX, Va. -- Intel Corp., the world's leading maker of computer chips, said Tuesday it will locate a $130 million Internet service center in Virginia that will employ 250 people.
Intel Online Services will house more than 8,000 servers and run the Web sites and e-commerce operations of numerous companies at the Fairfax County site.
The 73,000 square foot building near Dulles International Airport should be in operation by early 2000. That will make it a neighbor to the world's largest Internet-services company, Dulles, Va.-based America Online Inc.
The Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C., have seen enormous growth in high-tech and Internet businesses in recent years.
"A large and growing proportion of the world's Internet traffic flows through Virginia," Mike Aymar, Intel vice president and general manager of Intel Online Services, said. "That made Virginia a natural location for Intel's expanding Internet-services hosting business."
The first two Internet service centers of Intel Online Services already are operational. One is a production plant in Santa Clara, Calif., and the other is a development facility in Folsom, Calif. The company plans to develop similar centers in Japan and England.
Besides being the world's largest maker of computer chips, Intel is also a leading manufacturer of computer, networking and communications products. |
