Global Crossing to Make Asian Unit a Public Company [GBLX]
9/28/99 5:10:21 PM Following article was obtained from BloombergCo-chairman Gary Winnick said Global Crossing made the commitment to Microsoft and Softbank when the companies paid $350 million for a 7 percent stake in the Asia Global Crossing unit this month. Hamilton, Bermuda-based Global Crossing is building a worldwide fiber-optic telecommunications network. Global Crossing is paying $1.3 billion to construct the network in East Asia. Selling shares in the unit could boost its value and help finance the planned expansion to other parts of the region. "You will never maximize the value of your company by keeping assets locked up inside," Winnick said in an interview at Telecosm '99 in Squaw Valley, California. Global Crossing rose 1 5/8 to 26 ¼. Trading of 53.3 million shares was 10 times the three-month average daily volume, making Global Crossing the most active stock in U.S. markets. Proceeds from an initial public offering could help the unit pay down some of its debt. Winnick didn't say how much Global Crossing would plan to raise. Microsoft, the world's No. 1 software maker, and Softbank, which buys stakes in online companies, also bought three years of network capacity from Global Crossing for $200 million.

9/28/99 4:33:50 PM AT&T Corp. [T] is expected to announce an order for as many as two million cable set top box (STBs) from General Instrument Corp. [GIC], today's Wall Street Journal reports. The report also said that AT&T will source another one million cable modems from Motorola Inc. [MOT]. AT&T cable STB/modem deals are expected to cost the company a cool $1 billion. AT&T is saying nothing about the deals, but sources suggest that the related pacts will be formally announced by the companies on Wednesday

Late market rally gives DOW back most of losses
9/28/99 4:09:10 PM At one point during today's trading session, the Dow was trading lower by over 200 points, with curbs kicking in, and 30 minutes before the close, the markets began to rally, and the DOW managed to close lower by 29 points. We recently said we expect the S&P to stall around 1295 - 1298 as it was rallying, and it stalled at 1297. The S&P finished the session lower by 1.12, and the NASDAQ managed to close lower by 5.49.
