What on earth does this mean? If they split the shares, buyers just
get a smaller percentage ownership in the company.

Most Stock exchanges recommend that listed companies keep their share price at about $20 so that someone with $2000 can buy a round lot of 100 shares. Perhaps, that is what Dr J is saying.
