The atrophying is from nerve damage. I didn't get that far along, but they told me that is what happens if the condition goes untreated. It may be reversable once they get the pressure off of the nerve. I don't know, since it wasn't applicable to the injury I had.

I still get twinges of pain in my neck and shoulders, and I can no longer carry a shoulder satchel at work without my fingers going numb, but at least I don't get the electric bolts blasting down my arm anymore.
