The mission will be led by United States Secretary of Commerce William Daley and will include meetings with heads of state and visits to government agencies and major business associations. Mission delegates will also participate in major trade conferences in Israel, Egypt, Gaza/West Bank, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
The focus of the mission as defined by the Department of Commerce will be the development of international commercial opportunities in response to the recent liberalization of the region's economies and the privatization of key industry sectors. The mission will also demonstrate a high level of U.S. Government and private sector interest in participating in the economic growth of the Middle East, encouraging the governments of the region to move quickly into the global market economy.

Only 15 senior business executives have been invited by the Department of Commerce to join the delegation. Also participating in the mission will be James K. Lukomski, Corporate Vice President & Director of Motorola, Oubay Atassi, Vice President of Nortel Networks, Per Wold-Olsen, President of Merck & Co., Inc. and Richard Bergsieker, Senior Vice President of Enron Corporation.
