SANYO Develops a New Polymer Battery Technology Accomplishes the Establishment of a Full-Fledged Battery Business Enterprise
September 24, 1999---SANYO Electric Co., Ltd., a world leader of small-size, rechargeable batteries today announced the development of a new high performance, thin-type lithium polymer battery through its own original technology (46 domestic and overseas patents pending) and introduction into this battery business enterprise. Shipments begin September of 1999. Production will be located at SANYO Electric Co., Ltd., Soft Energy Company in Sumoto City, Hyogo, Japan. The expansion of production capabilities will reach 400,000 cells per month by the spring of 2000. Increases in production are planned to coincide with market trends.
In 1994, SANYO began selling lithium ion batteries that employ graphite negative electrodes and in 1995 developed a thin, prismatic lithium ion battery that employs an aluminum alloy exterior. At present, SANYO leads the market in this field.
SANYO will continue to utilize the main features of prismatic lithium ion batteries. Furthermore, SANYO has developed a lithium polymer battery that achieves an ultra-thin under 4mm with high performance and reliability and employs a complete gel-type electrolyte.
Presently, demand is rising rapidly for lightweight and thin portable information & communication devices such as portable phones, portable audio systems and PDA (personal digital assistants). Similarly, there is demand for thin and lightweight batteries for use in these devices. SANYO's lithium polymer battery can be utilized in a wide variety of market products.
This lithium polymer battery follows in the footsteps of a long line of SANYO batteries, from nickel cadmium and nickel metal hydride to lithium ion batteries.
Main Features ??High Performance and High Reliability with Newly Developed Complete Gel Type Electrolyte The newly developed polymer electrolyte obtains superb long life reliability, featuring more than 500 recharging cycles while also achieving high performance (gravimetric energy density of 156Wh/kg & volumetric energy density of 270Wh/l). ?@ ??Excellent Discharge Characteristics that Allow for Discharge at -20?? Typical points of weakness for lithium polymer batteries were its load and temperature characteristics. This newly developed polymer electrolyte possesses high ion conductivity even at low temperatures, thus making possible discharges at -20??. ?@ ??Achieves a Lightweight 156Wh/kg Gravimetric Energy Density with an Ultra-Thin Type Thickness of Under 4mm It was possible to achieve both an ultra-thin type thickness of under 4mm and obtain high leakage-resistance even when utilizing thin and light aluminum laminated film as the exterior packaging material because the electrolyte is completely gel-type. Furthermore, a 156Wh/kg gravimetric energy density was realized even with a lightweight unit at the 3mm range and above. ?@ Specifications Product Name Lithium Polymer Battery Model Number UPF363562 Size (H?~W?~L?j 3.6 ?~ 35.0 ?~ 62.0 mm Weight Approximately 13.5g Nominal Capacity 570mAh (4.2V Recharging) Nominal Voltage 3.7 V Volumetric Energy Density 270 Wh/1 Gravimetric Energy Density 156 Wh/kg
