Branson considering 5 pct stake in BA

LONDON, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Virgin Atlantic Airways chairman Richard Branson may buy a five percent stake in rival British Airways if its shares continue to tumble, the Independent reported on Wednesday.

Branson placed a buy order last October with his advisers Deutsche Morgan Grenfell, instructing them to buy a five percent stake in BA should the share price fall to 300p, the newspaper said.

The Independent said a Virgin spokesman confirmed on Tuesday that the buy order had lapsed but added that renewed weakness in BA's share price may again make it interesting.

``As the price heads towards 300p it must begin to look interesting as a recovery stock and we would certainly consider buying at that level,' the newspaper quoted the spokesman as saying.

BA shares fell to an 11-month low of 325.5p on Tuesday, as analysts pencilled in significant losses this year and caution set in ahead of next week's September passenger traffic numbers.
