(COMTEX) B: Sony's NewsBase Digital Newsroom System Goes On-the-air A
B: Sony's NewsBase Digital Newsroom System Goes On-the-air At RTNDA

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sep 29, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

RTNDA Booth No. 563--

Texas News Channel Among the Latest Facilities to Complete
NewsBase-TM- Installation

Sony's NewsBase(TM) nonlinear, server-based news production system
provides broadcast facilities with the digital tool for which they can
transition to the next step in newsroom automation.

Among the latest facilities to integrate Sony's digital NewsBase system
is the San Antonio-based, Texas News Network (TXN).

TXN has been on-air for almost a month with their NewsBase digital
newsroom system. TXN's facilities consist of a central production
facility located in San Antonio, with digital news bureaus in Houston,
Dallas and Austin. TXN takes completed stories (or raw footage) which
are transferred to the central San Antonio facility over a satellite
link where they are recorded on a video file server. Once received, the
NewsBase system allows the elements to be immediately available for
on-air play or for additional editing.

On-air broadcasts are transmitted via satellite to television stations
throughout Texas for re-broadcast. Already, TXN is transmitting news
programs to twenty-six stations, reaching every market in Texas.

According to Bob Rogers, President and CEO of TXN "When in the 1970's,
the industry went from film to video tape, that eliminated film
processing time. Now that we have reached the server environment, it
has compressed the editing time needed for getting stories to air."

Sony's approach to news production allows significant time-savings for
newsroom operations by providing key benefits to facilities. First,
video is routed directly to the editors' desktops via a central server
system, and allows access and editing of source material as it is being
received. This source material can also be accessed simultaneously by
multiple users to further save time in getting edited segments such as
breaking news stories to air.

"The beauty of our NewsBase news production system is that it has a
unique ability to scale across a wide range of station sizes," said
Peter Lude, senior vice president of systems engineering and marketing
for Sony Electronics' Broadcast and Professional Company. "The NewsBase
system provides fully-integrated server-based news production to bring
material to air quickly and efficiently."

Sony's ClipEdit(TM) software provides video viewing and editing on the
news writers' desktops. ClipEdit is Windows NT(R)-based and supports
most news text systems, allowing journalists the ability to edit both
video and text on their desktop.

TXN plans to use Sony's ClipEdit system to enable their journalists' to
edit low-resolution versions of material at their desktops. Once the
work is complete, the stories are immediately available for air at
high-resolution playback.

"With ClipEdit on our desktops, television journalists finally have
unlimited control of their news reporting and producing. No longer are
we constrained by videotape," said Greg Pasztor, TXN News Director.

In addition to the NewsBase server system and DNE-1000 digital news
editing workstations with ClipEdit software, TXN also uses Betacam
SX(R) ENG equipment, including six DNW-A75 editing VTRs, 17 DNW-9WS
camcorders and 10 DNW-A220 portable field editors. TXN's studio and
production room includes a DVS-7250 digital production switcher with
dual-channel DME-7000 and five DXC-D30H cameras for live production;
and DVS-V6464B routing switchers for routing and distribution.

Sony's NewsBase newsroom server system is in use, currently being
installed or is planning to be installed at: WSB Atlanta, Times Square
Studios Limited in New York, Texas Cable News in Dallas, KHON-TV
Honolulu, WXMI Grand Rapids, KDAF Dallas, KSWB San Diego, Turner Sports
Atlanta, WPIX New York, KTLA Los Angeles, WGN Chicago, CLTV Chicago,
KWGN Denver, TV Globo in Brazil, Televisa in Mexico, Reuters in the UK,
RAI in Italy, TeleMadrid in Spain, SF-DRS in Switzerland, VRT in
Belgium, Canal+ in France, Fuji TV in Japan, NHK-I in Japan, Iwate
Asahi in Japan, TV Asahi in Japan, and SME in Japan.
