Dell says wins $40 million Edward Jones contract

NEW YORK, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Dell Computer Corp. (NasdaqNM:DELL - news), the world's No. 2 personal computer maker, said on Wednesday that brokerage firm Edward Jones agreed to use Dell computers as its global standard in a deal worth an estimated $40 million.

Executives at the Round Rock, Texas-based computer maker have said they have been in a streak of big corporate sales wins, taking market share from Compaq Computer Corp.(NYSE:CPQ - news), the No. 1 PC maker.

``Our win rates for large corporate customers is better than 60 percent,' said spokesman Dwane Cox. ``We continue to have momentum in this space.'

Edward Jones, based in St. Louis, agreed to use Dell servers and notebook PCs, buying a PowerEdge 4350 server to manage the networks of new branches as it expands to 10,000 offices worldwide.

As part of the deal, each Dell server Edward Jones buys over the next two or three years will run on Sun Microsystems Inc.'s (NasdaqNM:SUNW - news) Solaris operating software, reflecting Dell's departure from installing mostly Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) software.

``In this contract the operating system is by Sun, which is our competitor in the hardware space,' said Dell spokeswoman Anne Birlin. ``We traditionally installed Microsoft operating systems, and we still do for many of our customers. But this is a further departure.'
