Even if MSFT were to be broken up into two or three companies, that would most likely mean that those companies would expand. It might even mean a greater rate of expansion for the non-OS part.

Regarding Linux, I have had it installed for years at home. It has issues. But why would anyone think that Linux would be a MSFT killer? Really. As I pointed out, MSFT has, for years, made more money off Apple OS than Apple does. Does anyone honestly think they will just watch and dither if Linux picks up steam? In point of fact, a breakup could help Linux for precisely the reason that there would be less business loyalty than before to MSFT OS. Those applications guys will definitely sell software based on Linux if it gets to critical mass.

Open Software has been around a long time. For some things it can work, and work well. But it is worth pointing out that open software that has gone big time has started with significant investment from public sources.

So - I think it's a bit overamped right now.
