Novell to Introduce Web Software for Restricting Personal Info
San Francisco, Sept. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Novell Inc., the No. 2 maker of networking software, will unveil a product next week that lets users manage access to their personal information on the Internet, Chief Financial Officer Dennis Raney said.
The software, dubbed ``digitalme,' allows users to release only approved personal information when conducting transactions or communicating online. For example, a consumer might want to provide a rental-car agency with an address and credit card and driver's license numbers, and reveal only a name and an e-mail address to a chat room.
The personal data will be stored in a secure ``digital safe deposit box,' Raney said. The company expects to see demand for the software from Internet directories, access providers and online retailers.
``You decide which portion of your identity you give,' Raney said at an investment conference sponsored by Banc of America Securities. ``It's a platform for e-commerce and e- service sites that allows whole new levels of customer intimacy and retention.'
Raney didn't say how much revenue Provo, Utah-based Novell expects to gain from sales of the new product. He said the company hasn't provided analysts or investors with any forecasts about sales of the product.
``At this point we haven't factored in any significant product revenues,' Raney said. ``It really hasn't been sized as to what we think it will bring to our business.'

I hope that he was accompanied by someone from the digitalme group who then had private meetings with some potential finance and banking partners. For next week in NYC invites to the banks should be prime. Wine and dine. |
