Merced will take those markets to new performance levels while still retaining the pricing and the high-volume aspects that Xeon already has. One of the problems of Xeon servers is that even though the price/performance ratio is superior to that of the RISC competition, absolute performance still falls behind.

So in other words, while Xeon does well in the price/performance aspect, Merced will go after the pure performance aspect while still retaining the price/performance advantage.
