Tony, Earthquake musings: I too am an immigrant to CA. Been through several good shakers since then as I'm sure you have - with no damage to my health and little damage to my property - but I'm just lucky. I can't explain the feelings of helplessness and fear that comes with the sudden movement of the earth under you when it comes so unexpectedly and violently. You first think "Omigod is this it?" And then you wait for it to stop and think about what might fall on you. And if nothing happens, you exhale a huge sigh of relief. Here's my luck - An accelerograph, mounted into shallow rock on a hilltop ranch once owned by Edgar Rice Burroughs that is about 200 yards from my house, recorded an up-down jolt of 1.82g. It also recorded several spikes as high as 1.5g in all directions during a period of nearly eight seconds during the quake which struck at 4:31 am. These readings were the highest measured readings from the quake and among the highest ever recorded at the time of the quake. The quake was only a 6.6! My house is a single story ranch on slabs and the slabs and family came thru with flying colors - pun intended. I hope that anybody who ever experiences anything like this has the same luck I did. But the truth is, it depends on where you are at the time. For me, being at home and in my bed was the safest place I could be considering I was only 3-4 miles from the Northridge epicenter. There is still no dread in me. Can't say there was on those icy roads either. BTW Duke, NY winters are like summer compared to winters in Chicago. Winters in earthquake country are one of the things that make it all worth it to me. Barry
