INTERVIEW--AT&T denies Internet speculation
By Matthew Lewis

HARTFORD, Conn., Sept 29 (Reuters) - Amid a swirl of rumors that long distance and cable giant AT&T Corp. (NYSE:T - news) was planning a major Internet deal, a top official denied much of the speculation in an interview Wednesday.

Leo Hindery, head of AT&T's cable and Internet unit, said the company was not in discussions to sell its stake in high-speed Internet service provider ExciteAtHome Corp. (NasdaqNM:ATHM - news) or to strike a deal with America Online (NYSE:AOL - news).

ExciteAtHome Corp. shares surged in heavy trade earlier Wednesday on revived speculation that its largest shareholder, AT&T Corp., was in talks to sell its stake to America Online.

''Absolutely not,'' Hindery told Reuters in an interview. ''There've been no discussions underway whatsoever. I typically don't comment on things of that sort, but when it's absurd, I do.''
