Akula, In my particular situation it was around 6 months for both. The determining factor at the time,(25 to 30 years ago) according to the Pediatrician, was that when the baby could drink "Store bought" milk and eat baby food, their digestive system had developed enough that they didn't need mother's milk any more.

There is no better food for babies than mother's milk. Never too hot or cold. The baby also gets immunity to diseases from the mother. Air bubbles from bottles and painful gas are not a problem. Middle of the night feedings are calm and simple, no waiting for the bottle to heat up to the right temperature. It creates a stronger bond between mother and child.

As for the length of time, a year could be too long for the mother. Cutting teeth are like razor blades.
And 2 years may be too long, only because the child is old enough to throw temper tantrums, making it very difficult for the mother to wean the child off.

I'll be happy to answer any more questions you have.
