jmac, there are many variables. intel ultimately lowers prices so they can sell their chips. if they didn't, they wouldn't sell as many. amd has stolen massive consumer market share from intel. they would have stolen much more if intel didn't lower their prices.

mfrg efficiencies tend to go down over time also. lucky companies aren't forced to lower their prices more quickly than their costs are lowered. not every company is as fortunate.

intel net margins are not at record levels. they make more money b/cthey sell more chips at less profit per chip.

you can bet your bottom dollar they DREAM of selling these chips at a higher margin but they CAN'T. not by choice. competition (market forces - supply and demand) dictate their pricing.
