Well, you made a statement that you admit there is no rational explanation for. Sometimes we utter things out of political reflex. The whole point with regards to this topic is the interesting dynamic with regards to quotas that I see here, now that affluent students are being excluded from the top schools on strictly academic merit. I don't have a position one way or the other... I will say that 10 years ago I was convinced quotas of any kind were an awful idea. Now, I'm not so sure, and I say that for all involved, because I see an almost "separate but equal" situation developing... in reverse - where entire schools graduate one homogeneous set of students that are only "book smart". But anyway, its a complex issue that deserves a little thought, vs. the old tired "you yuppie you - I took a high school biology class once" defense. I contend that every private university on the east coast embraces quotas and this will create an advantage for them over the public institutions over the long run... and the students will suffer too.
