Microsoft to rent their software. Playing catchup with Sun again.

cbs.marketwatch.com

This means it could well be in the market before Sun, whose products are due for a formal launch next spring. George Ming, group president for Microsoft Office, said Wednesday that the company had tested early versions of its online offering and was pleased with their performance. He said the company had no dates for a product launch, but it is understood to be planning an announcement for next week's Internet World conference in New York

By which I read they will announce plans for a launch, and try their usual FUD tactics. Which means we will see an actual solution some time in 2001. Go ahead Microsoft: try renting and see how many people actually go for it. Compared with free StarPortal. It'd better rent cheap.
