...yes, the weather thread has not been quite as popular as some others out there, your thread included Jon;-) Of course I've not made much of an effort to seed it with cool links and spam the other threads for an audience, maybe someday--perhaps next spring when I will be home for about a month, plus spring is a pretty active weather month around the country...
So, how do you spice up an online forum about the weather? --I'm often batting around ideas about on online weather website--easy to digest model data, animated gif's and such, chat rooms, ask the experts--all that. Basically everthing you would think that The Weather Channel or Accuweather should be doing by now--on a regional scale, but is simply not economically viable. There is a limit to how much of this sort of thing we can do at the NWS--do anything good and you get slapped by the private mets for competing--although lately there may be more of an initiative to get creative with our websites, we shall see--it is all completely unorganized right now.
TWC and Accuweather-- These guys have a great business model right now--repackage free government data. And although they do their own forecasts (to a very limited degree compared to the NWS) these 'forecasts' are all rooted in the same guidance, NWS numerical models--merely different interpretations of that guidance.
Accuweather even claims to be more accurate than the NWS...I don't know about that, if you get to choose the one measure by which skill is gauged, and disregard everything else, then that one statistic does the lie for you.
I put this thread here awhile back to try and bounce a few ideas of folks. I've not yet struck it rich playing the stock market, so I'm not quite ready to start my regional weather website yet...but it's an idea that festers in me, an itch you cant scratch.
Have a great day Jon, happy trades and all that good stuff! |
